Natural Features:
This glade developed on dolomite of the Davis formation, a Cambrian period rock formed over 500 million years ago. Few dolomite glades such as this occur in the St. Francois Mountains region. It has a set of plant species including gum bumelia, Missouri evening primrose, rose verbena, calamint, and glade heliotrope that are not found on nearby igneous glades.
This natural area is within Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park. Access to this natural area is difficult. Inquire at the park office about a visit to this natural area. To reach the park office: from the intersection of Highway 21 and Highway N north of Pilot Knob (Iron Co.) go west nearly 13 miles to the park entrance on the left (south). Follow the signs to the park office.
