CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants to turn the tide on Nature Deficit Disorder. The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will host a “Families in Nature” event on June 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., where families can learn about Nature Deficit Disorder and also spend time in nature together.
“We’ve planned a sampling of outdoor activities that families will enjoy and that will also help to counteract the symptoms of Nature Deficit Disorder,” said Education Consultant Bridget Jackson.
Kansas City, Mo. – At least three peregrine falcon chicks are stirring in their nest on a ledge at the Commerce Tower skyscraper, said Joe DeBold, an urban wildlife biologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). The eggs hatched late last week and the falcon family can be watched on live streaming video at mdc.mo.gov/node/21769

BOONVILLE, Mo. -- There is something about a big tree that commands interest, respect, and a certain amount of awe. Jim Weyland of Howard County has a big tree that not only induces awe; he now has reason to celebrate it as well, as it was recently named a Missouri Champion northern red oak (Quercus rubra) by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).
Weyland’s tree measures 216 inches in circumference, stands 98 feet high and has an average crown spread of 74 feet.
Princeton, Mo. – Most people visit Lake Paho to catch trophy largemouth bass or to enjoy the green rolling hills of northwest Missouri. History lurks among the coves and fields, too. The 273-acre lake was built in Mercer County by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in the late 1940s, making it one of MDC’s oldest public fishing lakes.
