SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Owls are infrequently seen because of these birds’ nocturnal lifestyles. But that doesn’t mean they’re not appreciated. Because of their hunting of mice, rats and other rodents that can be pests for humans; these fascinating creatures are a beneficial part of Missouri’s outdoors.
People can learn more about the species of owls found in Missouri on Feb. 7 at two free Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) programs:
Branson: The “Owl Prowl” program is from 7-9 p.m. at MDC’s Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Center in Branson and will feature an indoor and outdoor component. People will first learn about owls and their special adaptations in the conservation center’s auditorium. Program participants will then have a chance to listen for owls on an evening stroll guided by MDC staff on a trail near the hatchery. Participants should bring flashlights and dress for the weather. The Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Center is part of MDC’s Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery and is located at 483 Hatchery Road on the west end of Lake Taneycomo near Branson.
Springfield: On the same evening, from 7-8:30 p.m., people can learn about owls at the “Discover Nature: Owl Prowl” program at MDC’s Springfield Conservation Nature Center. In the nature center’s auditorium, Dickerson Park Zoo staff will present programs with live owls. In addition to these programs, people can take guided evening strolls along nature center trails where MDC staff will try to call owls and get them to answer. Participants should bring flashlights and dress for the weather. The program is for all ages. People can register for this event at:
