Mound City, Mo. – The Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free Family Fishing Day from 1 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at the refuge near Mound City. The fishing will be at the refuge pond located near the main entrance for the auto tour at U.S. 159. MDC will provide all tackle and bait needed as well as coaching help for newcomers to fishing. Anglers may also bring their own gear.
This event is an opportunity for individuals and families to learn basic fishing skills or simply enjoy a chance to catch fish from pond stocked with native species. The refuge and MDC staff members will be present to teach how to cast with rod and reel, how to bait hooks, how to handle fish, and other tips. No fishing permits are needed for this event.
Early June is a fine month to go fishing in small lakes and ponds. Fish are usually active close to the shore within casting distance. Participants should dress for the weather. COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed. Registration is not necessary.
