O’FALLON, Mo. — Larry Lindsey of O’Fallon was awarded the distinction of 2017 Bowhunter Education (BHE) Instructor of the Year for the St. Louis Region in February.
The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Bowhunter Education Program (BHE) helps make Missouri a safer place to hunt. The success of the program is in large part due to the dedication and efforts of the BHE instructors, like Lindsey.
In 2017, Lindsey taught as a volunteer two BHE classes in which he certified 18 students in the program. Lindsey volunteered 22 hours last year and has been a BHE instructor for the past eight years.
In addition, Lindsey has lent 65 hours of his time and talents this past year in teaching nine HED skills sessions where he helped 145 students become certified.
“Larry Lindsey has been an essential part of the St. Louis Region BHE program. Larry's accomplishments make him an ideal recipient for the MDC Volunteer BHE Instructor of the Year award for 2017,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Scott Sarantakis.
Sarantakis pointed out that Lindsey also assisted with various managed hunts in 2017 by serving as a mentor for both youth and adult hunters. He served as a mentor for the first time adult deer hunt held on the Forest 44 Conservation Area.
Lindsey has also earned a Basic Archery Instructor Certification in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).
As regional Volunteer BHE Instructor winner, Lindsey will also be considered for the award on the statewide level.
While it is not required by statewide game regulations, MDC strongly recommends that all archery hunters take the course for their own benefit. However many cities that allow archery hunting inside their city limits do require BHE certification to participate. Many other states require BHE certification before hunters are allowed to apply for or take part in bowhunts in their state as well.
The BHE program can serve as a refresher for veteran archery hunters as well. It is also open to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and has an interest in conservation. More information about the program can be found on MDC’s website at https://goo.gl/nvmkxA, or by calling (636) 441-4554.
