St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) free Discover Nature — Fishing lessons will be offered at Lawson City Lake from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, June 27 and June 28. All four lessons in the sequence will be offered in this fishing opportunity. Instructors will demonstrate tackle and skills such as casting a lure with rod and reel, then participants go fishing with help from MDC staff.

The Discover Nature — Fishing program lessons start with the basics about tackle, how to cast, how to bait a hook, and how to handle fish. The lessons then progress to information about common Missouri sport fish, where to fish, regulations, and advanced tackle and techniques. This program gives new anglers the knowledge and confidence they need to go fishing and catch fish.

An overview of fishing tackle and techniques will be provided by instructors Kelsey Gillenwater and Brandon Johnson, MDC community education assistants. Then participants will go fishing. Standard Missouri fishing regulations are observed and fishing permits are required if applicable. COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed.

All ages are welcome to attend. Youths must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required. To register for the June 27 session, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4iv. To register for the June 28 session, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/45k.
