FLORIDA, Mo.— The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer its Discover Nature – Girls Camp July 10 - 12 at Mark Twain State Park’s Camp Si Colburn in Monroe County. This free camp will introduce girls, ages 11-15, to a variety of outdoors skills in a supportive learning environment.

Campers will spend three fun-filled days learning hands-on outdoor skills, led by conservation professionals. Some of the planned activities include firearms safety, archery and target shooting, water safety, canoeing, and fishing. Campers will have a chance to shoot pellet guns and archery on target ranges under the supervision of experts, and receive Missouri Hunter Education certification.

Few childhood experiences offer the profound, life-changing power of camping. This experience offers girls the opportunity to grow their self-esteem, explore the great outdoors, make new friends and lifelong memories. One of the primary goals of camp is to encourage participants to leave with the confidence to explore Missouri’s diverse outdoors on their own.

All activities occur in a group setting of peers, and a comfortable, encouraging environment. Discover Nature – Girls Camp is led by conservation agents and other MDC employees who are experienced in working with children, trained in First Aid/CPR and have undergone appropriate background checks. Camp chaperones will all be females who have filled out an application and background form.

The camp is free but limited to 60 girls. The first 60 applicants will receive invitations to attend. All subsequent applications will be placed on a waiting list. Applications must be received by May 24. MDC also seeks adult female chaperones who would like to assist at the camp.

To apply for Discover Nature – Girls Camp, or to inquire about assisting as a chaperone, contact your local conservation agent, or call the MDC Northeast Regional Office in Kirksville at (660) 785-2420. Find contact information for your local conservation agent at mdc.mo.gov/regional-contacts.
