Kansas City, Mo. – Fly fishing requires some acquired skills with rod and line to place the lure before the fish. But the basics can be learned quickly, and Missouri’s small ponds and lake can be a fun place to catch fish such as bluegill and largemouth bass on a flyrod. The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer a free Stillwater Fly Fishing Basics class from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 29 and June 30. The first day’s class will be instructional at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. On the second day, the class will move for actual fishing time to a lake at the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit.
MDC will provide all fly fishing gear and lures for participants and provide coaching on using them to catch fish. The first session at the nature center will cover the tackle, casting techniques, and strategies for catching fish. Participants will get some casting practice outdoors with help from Alek Lanter, MDC conservation educator. On day two, participants will go fishing with help from MDC staff and volunteers.
“In this two-day clinic, participants can begin at a point of little to no knowledge of fly fishing and advance to where they can target fish in the lakes and ponds found around Missouri,” Lanter said.
This clinic is for participants ages 12 and older. COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed. A fishing permit is required for participants from ages 16-64. Statewide fishing regulations apply. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/45P.
