Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri River offers a wide variety of sights and sounds for the paddlers who travel on its currents. A free Magic of Sunset float trip on the river will be offered from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). This guided float trip will embark from the Platte Landing Park in Parkville, and the takeout will be at Kaw Point Park where the Kansas River flows into the Missouri. (THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL)
This float trip is for participants age 18 and older. Life jackets must be worn at all times while on the water. COVID-19 precautions will be followed. MDC can provide all necessary equipment including canoes or kayaks, paddles, and life jackets. Participants need to bring their own water and snacks or dinner, bug spray, and flashlights.
A mandatory orientation session will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the education pond at MDC’s Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. MDC staff will coach floaters on useful paddle strokes, boating safety, and navigation tips for the river.
On Sept. 11, paddlers will depart from the boat ramp at Platte Landing Park for the 10-mile float trip. Along the way, they will see the sights from a river vantage point. When they reach Kaw Point, they will have enjoyed sunset on the river to the west and will be able to see the night lights of downtown Kansas City to the east. They will also have the knowledge needed to take future float trips on the river.
This program will be adjusted if bad weather conditions warrant. Participants will be notified ahead of time about any changes. Registration is required and each participant must register separately. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Z9R.
