KANSAS CITY, MO. – Nature sets the table in autumn for making hand-crafted art or decorations reflecting the winter seasons ahead. People of all ages can transform native plant materials into holiday projects at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) free nature craft programs, with two upcoming programs in the Kansas City area.
MDC’s Burr Oak Woods Nature Center will offer a Holiday Nature Crafts session 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 1401 N.W. Park Road in Blue Springs. This program is geared for children but all ages are welcome. Participants will learn how trees provide habitat and food for wildlife as they work at the craft tables. Visitors can decorate a bur oak acorn as an ornament. The sometimes deep and wide cups that hold bur oak acorns as they develop have a fringe on the bottom, and they look bell like, lending themselves to crafting. Participants can also craft a pinecone Christmas tree.
The Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center offers a Holiday Greenings program 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16. Participants will learn how to decorate using boughs from red cedar trees, prairie grasses, wild nuts, berries, and seeds. Visitors of all ages are welcome to bring their imaginations and MDC staff will provide materials and guidance for making all-natural holiday decorations.
