Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free prescribed burn workshop 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, at the Bass Pro Shop in Independence. Prescribed burns, where fire is set and managed when weather conditions and fuel are safe, is an effective management tool for boosting wildlife habitat or livestock forage.
MDC experts will discuss how fire influenced ecology prior to pioneer settlement in Missouri in the 1800s. They will discuss timing of burns to achieve management goals for forests, woodlands with trees and grasses, or grasslands with native prairie wildflowers and grasses. Wildlife from deer and turkeys to birds and butterflies depend on native plants and trees for food and shelter. Fire can boost the growth and presence of native plants that evolved with wildfire on the landscape, including those growing in forage pastures. Fire can also reduce the presence of unwanted invasive or native species. MDC experts will talk about equipment, safety, techniques, developing fire plans, and organizing fire cooperatives so neighbors can assist one another with burns.
