Kansas City, Mo. – Some sing out at night, others hang out on logs in the warm sun by day. Either way, frogs and turtles are among the most commonly heard and seen creatures of summer. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer two free programs about these amphibians and reptiles on Saturday, June 25, in the Kansas City Area.
MDC’s Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs will offer a program on amphibians, especially frogs, from 10 to 11 a.m. on June 25. From high-pitched trill of the gray treefrog to the bullfrog’s deep chug-a-rump, frogs singing make many of the sounds heard outside at night. This program will explore what some naturalists call the amphibious choir. The program is open to all ages. COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed. Registration is required. The Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center will offer a Totally Turtles program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4750 Troost Ave. in Kansas City. This walk-in program is for all ages and does not require registration. Visitors will learn about Missouri turtles and their valuable role in natural ecosystems. MDC Naturalist Susan Harris will be assisted as program host by special guests Cindy McManis and Crystal Parson, know as The Turtle Ladies. Visitors will have a chance to see live exhibits such as Missouri’s smallest turtle, the stinkpot, and have a chance to touch the shell of a live snapping turtle.
