St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) provides fishing tackle that can be checked out, similar to checking out a library book, at 17 locations in the northwest Missouri region. Free use of loaner gear is offered through MDC’s Discover Nature ̶ Fishing program.

MDC has placed the fishing gear at public libraries, some MDC offices, and other locations for use by people who would like to try fishing. Anglers can check out rod and reel sets and tackle boxes with some basic fishing essentials, such as hooks and sinkers. For example, in St. Joseph, loaner gear is available at the St. Joseph Public Library, the Washington Park library, the Remington Nature Center, and MDC’s Northwest Regional Office on the campus of Missouri Western State University. But the loaner fishing tackle is also available in many other towns throughout northwest Missouri.
